My Advocacy Education

Being Transparent about my Journey

Learning, Growing, and Advocating with Purpose

My journey into special-education advocacy began with something very personal: being a mother and advocating for my own child.

Like many parents, I found myself trying to understand special-education terminology, school documents, evaluations, meetings, and processes that I had never encountered before.

There were times when I had questions and did not know where to find the answers. There were times when I had to slow down, research, take notes, ask questions, and learn how to better organize my concerns.

Through these experiences, I learned something important:

Parents do not have to know everything to begin advocating for their children. But we should be willing to continue learning.

My Lived Experience

My advocacy journey is rooted in my personal experience as a mother.

Advocating for my daughter has shown me how overwhelming the special-education process can sometimes feel for families. It has also shown me the importance of being informed, organized, and prepared.

I understand what it feels like to:

  • Sit in meetings and hear unfamiliar terminology.
  • Read reports and documents that are difficult to understand.
  • Have concerns but struggle to organize your thoughts.
  • Wonder what questions you should be asking.
  • Feel overwhelmed by emails, paperwork, and important dates.
  • Want to make sure your child's needs are understood.

My experiences do not make me an attorney or an expert in every area of special education.

They have motivated me to continue learning and to responsibly share educational information and resources with other parents.

My Commitment to Continuing Education

I believe responsible advocacy requires humility and a willingness to continue learning.

Special education involves complex laws, regulations, procedures, and individual circumstances. I do not believe anyone should pretend to have all the answers.

Instead, I am committed to:

📚 Continuing my education through trainings, workshops, and independent study.

🔎 Using reliable sources when researching and sharing information.

📝 Learning from my experiences while remaining open to new information.

🤝 Recognizing my limits and encouraging families to seek qualified professionals when their situation requires legal, medical, or other specialized advice.

🌱 Growing over time as my knowledge and experience continue to develop.

My Advocacy Training & Education

This section will document the trainings, workshops, and educational opportunities I complete as I continue my advocacy journey.

I believe in being transparent about my education and experience.

Completed and ongoing learning opportunities will be added here as my journey continues.

Areas of Study May Include:

  • Understanding the special-education process
  • Parent participation and collaboration
  • IEPs and educational planning
  • Evaluations and reevaluations
  • Behavior and discipline
  • Educational records and documentation
  • Parent rights and procedural safeguards
  • Effective communication and meeting preparation

As I complete additional training and educational opportunities, I will update this page to reflect my continued growth.

Why Continuing Education Matters to Me

When parents seek information or support, they deserve honesty.

I will never claim to know something that I do not know.

If I am unsure about information, I believe it is important to research reliable sources, ask questions, or encourage a family to seek assistance from an appropriate professional.

Learning is a lifelong journey, and responsible advocacy requires knowing both what you know and what you still need to learn.

My Purpose

My purpose is not to speak over parents or take control of their journey.

I want to help parents feel more:

❤️ Informed — by sharing educational information and reliable resources.

🗂️ Organized — by providing tools to help track documents, concerns, and important events.

📝 Prepared — by helping parents think about questions and concerns before meetings.

🗣️ Confident — by encouraging parents to use their own voices and share what they know about their children.

Every parent and every child has a unique story.

I may not have all the answers, but I understand the importance of listening, continuing to learn, and helping parents find the information and resources they need.

A Journey We Can Learn From Together

Akleema's World is growing alongside my own advocacy journey.

As I continue my education, I hope to share what I learn responsibly and provide resources that can help other parents feel less alone and more prepared.

My promise is to remain honest about my role, continue learning, and always remember why I started: because every child deserves to be understood, supported, and given the opportunity to learn and grow.

And every parent deserves to know that their voice matters.
