Navigating the special-education system can sometimes feel overwhelming. There may be meetings to attend, evaluations to review, emails to answer, concerns to document, and important decisions to make about your child's education.
As parents, we may know something isn't working for our children but struggle to understand the process, find the right questions to ask, or organize everything that has happened.
You are not alone.
Welcome to the Advocacy & Parent Support section of Akleema's World—a space created to support, encourage, and empower parents as they navigate their child's educational journey.
My journey into special-education advocacy began with my own experiences as a mother.
Like many parents, I have experienced the challenges of trying to understand educational documents, prepare for meetings, communicate concerns, and make sure my child's individual needs are understood.
Through my own journey, I have learned how important it is for parents to:
I am continuing my own education in special education and parent advocacy. My goal is not to pretend that I know everything or take the place of an attorney or qualified professional.
My goal is to learn, grow, share educational resources, and help other parents feel more informed and prepared to use their own voices for their children.
Akleema's World is focused on education, organization, resources, and parent-to-parent support.
Here, parents can find information and tools to help them better understand and navigate their child's special-education journey.
Special education can involve unfamiliar terms, documents, evaluations, and procedures.
Our Understanding Special Education section will provide simple, parent-friendly information about topics such as:
This section will continue to grow as I continue my advocacy education and research.
When concerns arise, parents may quickly find themselves with emails, school records, evaluations, meeting notes, and other important documents to keep track of.
Organization can help parents better understand what has happened and prepare for future conversations.
The Parent Advocacy Toolkit will include practical tools and resources to help parents organize information, including:
Some resources may eventually be available as free downloadable tools.
School meetings can sometimes feel intimidating, especially when there are multiple professionals discussing your child.
Parents deserve time to organize their thoughts and prepare questions.
Akleema's World encourages parents to come prepared by thinking about:
The goal is not to tell parents what decisions to make. The goal is to help them feel prepared to participate and use their own voice.
Behavioral concerns and school discipline can be especially difficult for families of children with disabilities.
Our Behavior & School Discipline section will provide general educational information and resources on topics such as:
This information is intended to help parents become more informed and prepared when navigating these situations.
Advocacy is a journey, and learning does not stop.
My own experiences have taught me that parents do not need to know everything before they begin asking questions and advocating for their children.
Through My Advocacy Education, I will share my continuing journey of learning through trainings, workshops, independent study, and reputable parent and disability organizations.
I believe responsible advocacy means:
The purpose of this section is to help parents feel less overwhelmed and more prepared.

You do not have to know every law, policy, or special-education term to be an advocate for your child.
Advocacy can begin with something as simple as asking a question, writing down a concern, requesting clarification, or sharing what you are seeing at home.
Keep learning. Keep asking questions. Keep documenting. And never forget that you know your child in ways that no one else does.
You are an important part of your child's educational journey.

I wanted to provide an update for everyone who has signed, shared, or is following my petition.
I recently updated the petition to make the purpose and request clearer.
The petition is asking Wisconsin lawmakers to consider establishing statewide standards for video monitoring in designated special education classrooms and other appropriate specialized educational settings.
I made these changes because I want there to be no misunderstanding about what I am asking for.
What the petition IS asking for:
I am asking Wisconsin lawmakers to consider whether Wisconsin should have statewide standards addressing issues such as:
• When video monitoring may be appropriate
• Students who may be unable to reliably report what happened to them
• Student privacy and dignity
• School staff privacy and protections
• Parent/guardian access and requests
• Who may access recordings
• How recordings should be retained and preserved
• How recordings should be used
• Audio recording considerations
• Procedures when there is a concern about student safety
• Appropriate safeguards and limitations
What the petition is NOT saying:
❌ It is not saying that every special education classroom should automatically have cameras.
❌ It is not saying that Wisconsin school districts currently have a statewide requirement to install cameras.
❌ The petition itself does not create or change any current legal requirement for school districts.
❌ It is not intended to presume wrongdoing by teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, or other school staff.
Instead, the petition is asking for a statewide policy discussion about whether standards should be considered and, if so, what those standards and safeguards should look like.
I believe this conversation should include parents and guardians, educators, school staff, administrators, disability advocates, people with disabilities, privacy experts, legal professionals, and other appropriate stakeholders.
I also want to thank everyone who has already taken the time to sign and share the petition. ❤️
If you have not read the updated petition, I encourage you to take a look:

If you believe this is an issue that deserves to be considered at the state level, please share the petition with other Wisconsin families, educators, advocates, and community members.
Thank you for taking the time to read, share, and participate in this conversation.
